# Local SEO or SEO: Which Does Your Business Need?

Updated 2026-10-15 · SEO Agencies Singapore

Short answer: Local SEO wins the Google map pack, the map and three listings shown for searches like 'plumber singapore'; Google says it depends on relevance, distance and prominence, and your Google Business Profile drives it. SEO wins the ordinary results below; your website drives it. A business customers visit or call locally usually starts with local SEO; an online or island-wide business with SEO.

## Two different parts of the same page

When someone in Singapore searches a local service on a phone, Google usually shows two things:

The map pack The ordinary (organic) results

## What decides the map pack

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence , which it describes as how well-known a business is, including how many websites link to it and how many reviews it has ([Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091?hl=en)). Distance is fixed. The other two are the work.

## Which to start with

 Start with local SEO if:

- Customers visit you, or you go to them

- They search with an area or “near me”

- You have, or could get, reviews

 Start with SEO if:

- You sell online or island-wide

- Customers research before they buy

- Your business is not tied to one place

Most local service businesses end up needing both: the map pack for the people ready to call, the website for the people still comparing.

## When choosing an agency

Ask which of the two they will work on first and why, and what they will change on your Google Business Profile versus your website. An agency that only talks about one when you need both is quoting for half the page.
